Minoxy 5% Topical Spray (Minoxidil)

Minoxidil 5% is the topical we start most male patients on, whether or not they go on to have a transplant. It works by extending the growth phase of follicles that are still alive but miniaturising, so it holds and thickens what you have. It does not regrow hair from scarred or fully dormant skin.

Apply to a dry scalp twice daily, spreading over the thinning area rather than just the visible gap. Rub it in and let it dry before lying down. Wash your hands afterwards.

Two things patients are rarely warned about. First, expect a shedding phase around weeks 2–6 — hairs in the old cycle drop before the new ones come through. This is the drug working, not failing, and it is the point at which most people quit. Second, minoxidil is maintenance, not a cure: the gains reverse over 3–6 months if you stop. Judge results at month 4, not before.

Common side effects are scalp dryness, itching, or flaking. Stop and speak to us if you get significant irritation, unwanted facial hair growth, dizziness, or a racing heart. Do not use it on broken or sunburnt skin. If you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or being treated for a heart condition, check with your doctor before starting.

If you are a post-op transplant patient, do not restart minoxidil until your surgeon clears you — usually after the grafts have settled.
